IceDiggers add goaltender Ferraro

November 14, 2007

The Alpena IceDiggers have added goaltender Matt Ferraro, the son of former NHLer Ray Ferraro, to their roster. Ferraro started the 2007-2008 season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the British Columbia Hockey League.

"We felt we needed to bring in a new guy,” said IceDiggers coach-GM Kenny Miller. “Not all of our defensive struggles have been because of our goaltending, but we think we can be better in goal and that’s why we’ve added Matt."

The Trail, British Columbia, native played in 10 games for Cowichan Valley this season, recording a record of 4-3. Ferraro started the season with three straight wins for the Capitals.

Prior to playing in the BCHL, the 19-year-old spent three seasons playing Junior B in Canada; two with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks and one with the Castlegar Rebels in the KIJHL.

Ray Ferraro spent 18 years in the NHL and Matt’s younger brother, Landon (16), is a member of the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League.

"As an organization, we’re always trying to make our hockey team better and by adding Matt we think we’ve done that," added Miller. "We’ll take a hard look at our goaltending situation and make a decision that’s best for the entire club."
