NAHL Showcase Tournament: Day 2 recap

The second day of the four-day North American Hockey League (NAHL) Showcase Tournament, sponsored by SBK Hockey, wrapped up on Thursday, Sept. 16.

St. Louis Bandits 2 – Coulee Region Chill 1 (OT)


Forward Ryan Stouffer’s overtime goal lifted the Bandits to a 2-1 victory over the Chill.  Forward Chris Ciotti connected for the other St. Louis marker, and goaltender Jimmy Hamby stopped 28 shots.

Bismarck Bobcats 3 – Springfield Jr. Blues 2

Three different players lit the lamp and forward Francis DeAugustine chipped in two assists in the Bobcats’ 3-2 triumph over the Jr. Blues.  Defenseman Tom Rizzardo notched the game-winning goal, and netminder Daniel Harper made 26 saves.

“It was easy to see for anyone watching that we didn’t have our best effort in the second period,” admitted Bobcats head coach Layne Sedevie, “but we responded well. We competed much, much better in the third and it was a lesson well-learned for our guys: Good things happen when you work hard and compete.”

Corpus Christi IceRays 5 – Chicago Hitmen 4

Forward Beau Walker struck for a goal and two assists, including one on Jacob Diamond’s game-winning marker, as the IceRays downed the Hitmen, 5-4.  Between the pipes, Marco Wieser turned back 43 shots.

Janesville Jets 3 – Alaska Avalanche 2

Three different players scored for the Jets - forward Connor McBride notched the game-winner - and goaltender David Jacobson made 28 saves in Janesville’s 3-2 triumph over Alaska.

Topeka RoadRunners 4 – Motor City Metal Jackets 0

Netminder Rasmus Tirronen steered aside all 23 shots he faced as the RoadRunners blanked the Metal Jackets, 4-0.  Forwards Justin Hussar (goal, assist) and Michael Hill (two assists) each fashioned two-point games for Topeka.

Traverse City North Stars 4 - Austin Bruins 0

Goaltender Tyler Marble made all 42 saves in the North Stars’ 4-0 triumph over Austin.  Forward Ryan Amin struck for a pair of goals in the win, and forward Kelin Ainsworth added three assists.

Wichita Falls Wilcats 2 – Wenatchee Wild 0

Goaltender Eric Garavaglia turned back all 26 shots he faced as the Wildcats blanked the Wild, 2-0.  Forward Dakota Kiecha (game-winner) and defenseman Chris Leone put home the Wichita Falls’ goals.

Owatonna Express 6 – Port Huron Fighting Falcons 2

Forwards John Haeg (game-winning goal, assist) and Chris Bournazos (two assists) each recorded two-point games as the Express rolled to a 6-2 victory over the Fighting Falcons.  Jared Lenner made 21 saves between the pipes.

Texas Tornado 5 – Kenai River Brown Bears 3

Forward J.D. Howard netted a pair of goals and forward Rock Einersen added a goal and an assist in Texas’ 5-3 win over Kenai River. In goal, Josh Hillegas turned away 13 shots.

Dawson Creek Rage 2 – Alexandria Blizzard 1 (SO)

Goaltender Edward Dyson came up with 46 saves in regulation and overtime and all three in the shootout as the Rage bested the Blizzard, 2-1.  Forward Derek Johnston scored Dawson Creek’s goal in regulation.

Michigan Warriors 6 – Aberdeen Wings 0

Goaltender Brach Tiller turned back all 31 shots he faced in the Warriors’ 6-0 victory over the Wings.  Forwards Brad Chapman and Justin Hoomaian both picked up a goal and an assist in the win.

Fairbanks Ice Dogs 5 – New Mexico Mustangs 3

Forwards Jared Linnell and JT Osborn each connected for a goal and an assist as the Ice Dogs bested the Mustangs, 5-3. Between the pipes,  Steve Perry made 24 saves.

Fresno Monsters 4 - Amarillo Bulls 3

Four different players scored for Fresno and defenseman Tom Hilbrich chipped in two assists as the Monsters edged the Bulls, 4-3.  Goaltender Louis Puig steered aside 20 shots.
