North Iowa forward Barnes makes NCAA commitment

April 26, 2017
North Iowa Bulls and NA3HL veteran forward Marshall Barnes has never been the flashiest player on the Bulls roster, but there’s no question – he gets results.

Those results have landed him in the NCAA ranks well ahead of the 2017-18 season, with Barnes announcing his commitment this weekend to the Concordia College Cobbers in Moorhead. The Edina, Minnesota native is the second North Iowa Bulls player in a week to announce a college commitment, after Nick Klishko’s Easter-weekend selection of the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets for his college plans.

Barnes has been a regular on the ice over the last two years, playing more than 100 games in the regular season and playoffs for the Bulls. He’s been the perfect setup man for his teammates as well – his 107 regular-season assists ranks second in North Iowa history, behind only three-year Bulls veteran Matt Kroska. His 56 assists during the Bulls’ 2015-16 Silver Cup title run was the high-water mark across the entire NA3HL. This season, Barnes tallied 74 points to lead the team, despite scoring just four goals after the Christmas break.

While it’s easy to get lost in the raw numbers of Barnes’s career, the recognition he received from the league’s coaches tells much of the story on its own. After being named to the NA3HL’s top All-Rookie team in 2015-16 (including the Central Division’s Rookie of the Year award), Barnes was also named this year’s Central Division Most Valuable Player. The Bulls won the regular-season division title by 24 points over runner-up La Crosse before dispatching the Freeze in a two-game sweep to earn the division’s Silver Cup tournament slot.

He’ll be the fourth North Iowa Bulls alumnus to pull on a sweater for the Cobbers, and the third from the team’s most recent Silver Cup championship squad. Quinn Fuchs and Joe Burgmeier both completed their freshman seasons this past year, helping Concordia to a 14-11-2 finish and a .500 mark in the Minnesota Conference. Also on the Cobbers roster is Mario Bianchi, who was a standout at the Academy of Holy Angels and a high school teammate of Barnes for two seasons. Bianchi played briefly for the Bulls in the 2014-15 season before finishing the season with the NAHL’s Janesville Jets.

The Bulls wish Marshall Barnes continued success and best wishes as a student athlete at Concordia College in Moorhead.
