New England goalie Lamanno makes college commitment

April 28, 2017
Dominic Lamanno has excelled while playing in the junior ranks and is set to provide a wealth of experience for the Waldorf University (NAIA, ACHA Division I) hockey team while providing an edge during the coming years.

Lamanno, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound goaltender from Oceanside, N.Y. who spent the past two seasons playing for the New England Stars in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL), signed a letter of intent with the Warriors on Monday.

“Dominic is an experienced goaltender with the ability to help us immediately,” Waldorf coach Brett Shelanski said. “His extensive hockey career will help him to make a quick and successful adjustment to the college game.”

A 2014 Oceanside High School graduate, Lamanno debuted in the junior hockey circuit during high school and became an impact player throughout the course of the past five years. He helped New England post a 33-20 record during the 2016-17 campaign as the Stars closed out the regular-season on a 10-game winning streak. Lamanno and the Stars continued an impressive season, topping the Cape Cod Islanders 2-1 in a best-of-three series during the NA3HL Coastal Division playoff semifinals to reach the division championship series against the Long Beach Sharks.

Appearing in 20 games this past season, Lamanno racked up 547 saves while posting a 0.913 save percentage. He notched one shutout and recorded a 2.55 GAA while playing 1,223 minutes in net.

Looking to build off the success he experienced playing junior hockey, Lamanno is thrilled to have the opportunity to step onto the ice at the collegiate level.“It’s a great feeling,” Lamanno said. “I’m very excited to continue my hockey career at a great school.”

He’s currently undecided on his area of study, but said he chose to attend Waldorf because of the university size, its “great hockey team and coaching staff” and the chance to obtain a great education.

After signing with the Warriors, Lamanno becomes the fourth member of the team’s 2017-18 recruiting class as he joins three former Dells Ducks standouts – Patrick Freeman from Quincy, Mass.; Sean Teske from Reedsburg, Wis. and Jaydn Munnelly from Elk River, Minn.

Waldorf is coming off its fifth straight season with at least 20 victories. The Warriors closed out the 2016-17 campaign with a 21-11-1 record, scoring nine wins over regionally-ranked opponents. During Waldorf’s final year in the Northern Collegiate Hockey League (NCHL), the Warriors turned in a 9-3 conference record to secure the No. 2 seed in the NCHL Tournament and also earned their fourth consecutive American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division II Central Region Tournament berth.

Lamanno’s success while playing against elite competition has him ready to answer the call between the pipes for the Warriors as they prepare to join the ACHA’s National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division during the 2017-18 season.

“He comes from a very good junior program that prepares players well for the next level,” Shelanski said. “We are very excited to welcome Dominic to the Warrior hockey family.”

“We have had a lot of great teammates come through our program and Dominic Lamanno might be near the top of the list. By the way – he’s also a really good goalie. I didn’t see a goalie in our league battle as hard as Dom did the last two seasons. His numbers were very solid and he improved greatly, especially at moving the puck. Waldorf found themselves a great goalie and a great teammate in Dom Lamanno,” said New England Stars Head Coach, Darryl Green.
