Lumberjacks win highlights NA3HL Sunday sweeps

Texas Brahmas defenseman Cal Couell had a big weekend to help his team pick up a weekend sweep in Louisiana to stay in 1st place in the South Division.

Granite City 5 @ St. Louis 2 - Four third-period goals helped the Lumberjacks snap a 1-1 tie with the Jr. Blues take this heavyweight battle by a 5-2 margin. Blake Spetz struck twice to lead the attack for Granite City, as Grant Troumbly, Tom Nagle and Bailey Sommers netted as well. Jacob Wiethaupt and Will Baginski lit the lamp for St. Louis, who received a strong 38 saves from Jack Regan. David Mulligan took the win with 25 stops between the Granite City pipes.

Texas 5 @ Louisiana 2 - The Drillers opened the scoring, but five unanswered goals saw the Brahmas take another key victory over their division rivals, this time dropping Louisiana 5-2 on the road. After Blake Siewertsen's opening goal for the hosts in the first period, Andrue Trelstad, Cal Couell, Michael Thomas Jr., Jack Cooper and Michael Redmon responded in a big way for Texas with goals in the following 20 minutes. Benjamin Cope got one back for Louisiana in the third, but Thomas Held staved off any comeback hopes for a 32-save win in the Brahmas goal. Samuli Aarinen and Grady Reis combined for 23 saves for Louisiana.
 
Oswego 2 @ Skylands 4 - Zach Burkhart and Steven Ford each posted 2g, 1a to guide Skylands to a 4-2 win over the Stampede to close out the weekend's action. Kavan Johnson starred in the Kings' cage with 29 saves, allowing goals only to Rich Hart and Dimitri Christou of Oswego. Ben White turned aside 33 pucks at the Stampede end. 
 
Maine 2 @ New England 3 (OT) - Conner Barter was the OT hero in New England on Sunday, bagging his second goal of the game to seal a 3-2 Stars win over the Wild. Derek Lovejoy scored New England's other goal, while Jason Gratz and Luke Church tallied for Maine. Tom Spero picked up 46 saves in the Maine cage, but Matthew Marini took the 13-save win for New England. 
 
Long Beach 1 @ L/A 14 - Zack Mullen and Armand O'Keefe potted hat-tricks, Cole Ouellette, Joe Bisson and Valeri Rykov each netted twice and the Nordiques comfortably coasted past the Sharks once again for a 14-1 victory on Sunday. Kyle Secor and Sam Frechette potted individual goals for L/A, while netminder Owen Liskiewicz stopped 11 of 12 in the win. Eric Immel broke Liskiewicz's shutout bid with Long Beach goal in the middle frame. Sharks' goaltender Darren Nathan finished with 53 saves on 67 shots. 
 
Evansville 0 @ Peoria 8 - Jaden Gardner picked up a shutout and Brandon Hay bagged a hat-trick as the Mustangs topped the Thunderbolts 8-0 on Sunday. Camden Swearingen also starred for Peoria with two goals, while Adam Brimie, Jack Radley and Jaycob Bland each found twine as well. Noah Brandau was active in the Evansville crease with a 37-save night despite the loss.
