Friday Finals: Bighorns close gap for Frontier lead

Peoria forward Thomas Kayner led his team to their 9th straight win on Friday.

Helena 4 @ Gillette 3: With the game tied at three goals a piece through 40 minutes, Adam Harvey netted the eventual game winner 8:43 into the final frame to give Helena the victory over the Wild. Helena bursted with early offense as Tyler Bloom, Corbin Skinner, and TJ Norris all scored goals in the opening period. In the 2nd, Isaac Young scored a pair of powerplay goals and Brock Trboyevich added another to even the scores. Both goaltenders had a busy night between the pipes, Eric Buccholz coming out on top stopping 45 of 48 shots. Jack Orchard made 39 saves for Gillette. 

Oregon 2 vs Peoria 3 (SO): The Peoria Mustangs and Oregon Tradesmen settle the winners in a shootout with a final score of 3-2. In the first period, Thomas Kayner (6:13) scored for a 1-0 Mustangs lead. At 13:55 Sam VanderHoeven scored his 38th of the season to tie the game 1-1. In the second period, Peoria got ahead 2-1 with Massimo Polistina at 11:14. Amir Velikhanov netted the game tying goal at 12:49 for a 2-2 scoe heading into the third period. After a scoreless third, the game went into overtime, then a shootout. In the shootout frame, Jentzen Kaebel would score the game-winning goal for Peoria to take a 3-2 win over the Tradesmen. 

Danbury 2 vs Norwich 3: The Norwich Sea Captains topped the Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks by a score of 3-2. In the first period, Tim Hayden notched the first goal of the night getting Danbury ahead 1-0. In the second Danbury earned another for a 2-0 score when Dylan Walker scored. Norwich answered back with Troy Harwell making it a 2-1 score. In the third, Sea Captains Trevor Souza lit the lap to make it 3-1 at 7:42. Nearing the end of the game, Nikita Kovelaev scored his 29th of the season to get the Hat Tricks within one goal. Norwich held on to keep the lead for a 3-2 final. 

Oklahoma City 6 vs Atlanta 3:The Oklahoma City Ice Hawks took a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Capitals. Early in the first period, Avery Pittman scored to get the Ice Hawks a 1-0 lead. Soon after, Anthony O’Neal netted a goal at 6:46 to even the game 1-1. In the second period, Carson HOlliday scored to get the Capitals ahead 2-1. Atlanta answered back with  Nick Mumford scoring soon after at 3:40 to tie the game 3-1. OKC would take back control of the game adding 4 goals in the second period for a 5-1 lead. In the third period, Robby Rabroker scored with less than a minute to play for a final score of 6-3. 

TX RoadRunners 4 vs Louisiana 3 (OT): The Texas RoadRunners and Louisana Drillers would decide a winner in overtime in a 4-3 final score. Mason Wilbur would start the scoring in the first period to get the Drillers ahead 1-0. In the second, Jaron Ketterman scored to even the game 1-1. Past the halfway mark of the second, Josh Hrip scored to get the Drillers a 2-1 lead. Soon after, Jack Herron netted a goal to even the game 2-2. In the third, Samuel Bourdon found the back of the net to get the RoadRunners ahead 3-2. At 13:40 Micheal Harrel would score to even the game 3-3. In the extra frame, Samuel Bourdon scored just forty-one seconds in to get the 4-3 win for the RoadRunners. 

New Ulm 2 @ Alexandria 6: Alexandria forward Cole Klingbeil recorded a hat trick to push the Blizzard past New Ulm 6-2. The game was knotted 1-1 after 20 minutes as the Blizzard’s Matt McIntyre scored early and Zach Dalzell answered for the Steel minutes later. In the middle frame, Klingbeil scored a pair and Justin Wasvick tallied another to put the Blizzard ahead by three. In the 3rd, MckIntyre found twine for a second time and Klingbeil completed the hat trick to seal the victory. Jack Laser scored midway through the 3rd to provide New Ulm’s other goal. In net, Joey Greilich snagged the victory stopping 17 of 19. Alex Benson was dealt the loss, keeping out 41 of 47 shots. 

Milwaukee 1 @ Wausau 2: In what proved to be a battle between the netminders, Blake Neill answered the bell for the Cyclones 8:35 into the 3rd for the eventual game winning goal. Wausau was provided offense early as Luke Anderson buried his 9th of the year less than three minutes into the game. After a scoreless middle frame, Mason Ausmus answered for the Power five minutes into the 3rd. Neil’s power play goal came minutes later and was enough to edge past the visitors. Zach Dosan had an outstanding performance for the Cyclones, stopping 33 of 34. Kaden Grant put up a valiant effort, keeping out all but 2 of 42 shots faced. 

Minnesota 0 @ Granite City 8: Xander Roberts stopped all 14 shots he faced to secure a shutout in the Lumberjack’s dominant win over the loons. Notable offensive performances for Granite City came from Coby Weber who scored a hat trick, Brett Reed who potted a pair and dished a helper, and Andrew Butler who buried a goal and assisted on another. A total of 13 Granite City skaters found the points sheet. Tucker Skime and Brock Masseth were the other goal scorers. Payton West was dealt the loss in Minnesota’s crease, making 52 saves in the effort. 

Sheridan 5 @ Butte 6: A four goal second period and two goals from Caleb Manson helped the Cobras edge past Sheridan in regulation Friday night. Although on the losing end, the most outstanding performance came from Sheridan forward Parker Norling, recording all five goals for the visitors. Fabian Vik gave Butte the first lead with a goal midway through the opening period. Caleb Manson added a pair of goals while Nick Bradshaw and Luke Schleusner each added another to extend the lead. Sheridan remained only down a pair through 40 minutes as Norling recorded a natural hat trick in just 8 minutes after his first of the night. Norling scored again early in the 3rd to lower the deficit but Caelin Chinery scored his 8th of the season for the Cobras and reclaim that two goal lead. Norling scored his 5th of the night with 4 minutes remaining in regulation, but it was too late. Caleb Cross secured the win making 37 saves. Patric Loeffler was busy in the Sheridan blue paint, stopping 75 shots in the contest. 

Rochester 9 @ St. Louis 1: The Rochester Grizzlies held the Jr. Blues to just a goal in their emphatic Friday night victory on the road. Forward Adam Johnson scored four goals in the contest, bringing his season goal tally to 13. Max Breon also deposited a pair of goals for the Grizzlies while defenseman Matthew Shaw scored one and dished a helper in the winning effort. St. Louis’ lone goal came late in the 2nd period as Phil Harrell would score his first of the year on the powerplay. Zach Wiese remained nearly perfect in the victory making 19 saves. Espen Reager took the loss stopping 43 of 52 shots. 

Badlands 4 @ Yellowstone 5 (OT): Brandon Kididis scored his 2nd goal of the game and the overtime winner 1:30 into the extra period to give the Quake the victory and snap a two-game losing streak. The two teams traded goals in the 1st as Isaiah Burchett and Jack Harris scored for Yellowstone while Levi Knight and Derrick Brown answered with tucks for the Sabres. Kididis found twine midway through the 2nd period but Badlands’ Keagon Holloway answered with a goal just minutes later. In the 3rd, Mason Martin gave the Sabres their first lead of the night with a powerplay score. With under four minutes remaining in regulation, Jack Harris scored his 2nd of the game to send the contest into overtime. Cole Eastman completed the victory with 36 saves. Zach Broxterman took the overtime loss stopping 38 of 43.
