Saturday Scores: Bighorns move to 8-0 with weekend wins

Milwaukee goalie Spencer Northway helped his team to a weekend sweep of Wausau, stopping 54 of 55 shots in the two wins.

Helena 6 @ Bozeman 1: The Helena Bighorns extended their undefeated record to now 8-0 of the 2022-23 campaign by defeating the Bozeman Ice Dogs by a score of 6-1.  Owen Ramsey got the game started as he scored at 4:36 of the 1st period. Then Bozeman tied the game at 16:05 with Cole Busher getting the goal. After the 1st period the game was tied at one a piece. The Helena Bighorns had a great 2nd period notching four goals and taking a 5-1 lead heading into the 3rd period and those goals were scored by Harlan Wojtusik, TJ Norris, Camden Cunningham, and Lyndon Orr. Then in the 3rd period Andrew Deskin scored on the power-play for the Bighorns which made them go on to win the game 6-1. Gabe Swanson was the winning netminder for Helena stopping 13 of 14 shots and Branigann Stalder turned away 26 of 32 shots in the loss for Bozeman. 

Wausau 0 @ Milwaukee 4: The Milwaukee Power took the momentum from last nights thriller overtime victory into today with a dominating 4-0 win over the Wausau Cyclones to sweep the weekend series. Michael Dalaly got the Power started scoring at 11:59 of the first period. Then in the 2nd period Connor O’Neal and Patrick Toomey added to the Powers lead as they took a 3-0 lead to the locker room after 40 minutes of play. In the 3rd period Patrick Toomey notched his 2nd goal of the game at 16:41. Spencer Northway got his first shutout of the season as he stopped all 27 shots that he faced for the Power and Mitch Miscevich turned away 34 of 38 shots in the loss. 

Granite City 4 @ Gillette 3 (SO): The Granite City Lumberjacks swept the Gillette Wild in the weekend series after taking some extra time plus a shootout to get the victory on the road by a score of 4-3. It was a scoreless game after the first period, but Gilette opened the scoring by taking a 1-0 lead at 6:55 of the 2nd period as Adam Severson got the goal for the Wild. That lead did not last long as Granite City soon tied the game at one at 7:25 and that goal belonged to Carson Van Zullen. After the 2nd period the score was deadlocked at one goal a piece. In the 2nd period Granite City took the lead as Brett Robinson Capitalized on the power-play at 8:03. Soon Gillette would score back to back goals taking the lead by a score of 3-2 and those goals belonged to Todd Powassin (PP), and Jace Johnson. Then at 15:33 Ashton Ericksen tied the game for Granite City. This game needed extra time and a shootout to decide a winner as Granite City ended up coming out on top. Xander Roberts was the winning goaltender for Granite City stopping 39 of 42 shots and Jake Turek made 55 saves on 58 shots in the loss for Gillette.

Norwich 6 @ New Jersey 0: The Norwich Sea Captains added another win on the season with a 6-0 shutout over the New Jersey Jr. Titans. In the first period, Jack Kinahan (3:39) and Angelo Donzella (11:18) scored to get the Sea Captain's ahead 2-0. In the third Jack Kinahan (12:42) netted his second of the night for a 3-0 score. In the third the Sea Captains scored three times with Brian Essing (6:30), Sava Makarenko (6:57) and Nicolas Piluso (9:58) to take a 6-0 win. Netminder Andrew Yocum turned away all 36 shots he saw in the win. 

Atlanta 1 @ Louisiana 4: The Louisiana Drillers swept the Atlanta Capitals in a weekend series after a 4-1 win. Thomas Mougin (14:53) netted the lone goal of the first for a 1-0 Louisiana lead. In the second, Cheno Gryska (11:53) scored to add to the Drillers lead. In the third period, Nick Mumord (3:47) got the Capitals on the board for a 2-1 score. Lukas Dany (7:31) and Daniel Crutcher (19:41) both scored for the Drillers to seal a 4-1 win. 

Long Beach 7 @ Bay State 3: The Long Beach Sharks topped the Bay State Bobcats in a 7-3 final score. Long Beach took a 2-0 lead after the first period with Jack Fitzpatrick and Dylan Harbour scoring. In the second, Tyler Fisher and Jack Fitzpatirck added to the Sharks lead for a 4-0 score. Beck Avery answered back for the Bobcats making the score 4-1. Late in the period, Jeremy Henk netted his second of the season to end the period with a score of 5-1. Early in the final frame, Colin McPherren added to the Sharks lead to make the score 6-1. The Bobcats added back-to-back goals with Brian Woak and Jason Melanson for a 6-3 score. Jack Fitzpatirdk added his third goal of the night for a hat-trick win for the Sharks, 7-3. 

Rochester 2 @ Peoria 1: The Rochester Grizzlies battled back after a loss on Friday to take a 2-1 win over the Peoria Mustangs, 2-1. In the opening period the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead with Tristan Trudel (2:30) netting his fifth goal of the season. Later in the period, Luke Sawicky (15:38) evened the game 1-1. After a scoreless second period, Lycncoln Bielenberg-Howarth (13:49) scored to get the Grizzlies a 2-1 win. 

Alexandria 2 @ Willmar 0: The Alexandria Blizzard shutout the Willmar WarHawks in a 2-0 final score. After a scoreless first, Ryan Hdland (14:55) netted the first goal of the game for a Blizzard lead 1-0. Late in the third period, Ethan Moerke (17:22) scored the game winning goal as the Blizzard won 2-0 over the WarHawks. Goaltender Kyler Abrahamson stopped all 34 shots he faced in the shutout win.

Mason City 5 @ New Ulm 2: The Mason City Toros split the weekend series today by defeating the New Ulm Steel by a score of 5-2. The Mason City Toros got off to a hot start by jumping out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play as those goals were scored by Cullen Hogan and David Loarh. In the 2nd period the Toros were able to extend their lead by a larger margin as they had a 5-1 lead heading into the 3rd period as Dylan Duckson, Nolan Christy, and Carter Newpower widened the deficit to four and Zach Maret picked up the lone goal in the 2nd period for the Steel. In the 3rd period the Steel kept the puck out of their net and were able to put one home of their own as Charlie Kielty scored at 10:12 of the 3rd period as the New Ulm Steel were defeated 5-2. Connor Graham picked up the win between the pipes for Mason City stopping 40 of 42 shots and Nolan Lacosse turned away 19 of 23 shots and Dixon Ehlers made 30 saves on 31 shots in the loss for the Steel. 

Great Falls 3 @ Butte 9: The Butte Cobras dominated the Great Falls Americans by winning 9-3 in their Saturday contest, and the Cobras were led by Luke Schleusner as he scored a hat trick with a total of 4 points in the victory. The Butte Cobras lead after 40 minutes by a score of 6-2 with goals coming from Nick Bradshaw and Luke Schleusner having two goals,Cade Wessman, and Patrick Cooks while Jace Thompson and William Fallman scored for the Americans. In the 3rd period Butte extended their lead even more while going on to win the game by a large deficit as Casey Otis, Nick Bradsahw, and Luke Schlesner scored for the Cobras and William Fallman scored the lone goal for the Americans on the power-play. Caleb Cross got the victory for the Cobras stopping 46 of 49 shots and Koziol Josh stopped 29 of 33 shots and Ryan Stowe stopped 29 of 34 for Great falls in the loss.
