Thursday highlights: Aberdeen, Topeka get big wins

October 28, 2011

Minot 0 @ Aberdeen 5

(Story and photo courtesy of the Aberdeen News)  The Aberdeen Wings took care of business on both ends of the ice on the way to a 5-0 win over the Minot Minotauros in North American Hockey League action at Odde Ice Center Thursday night.  Unlike their last game when the Wings blew a 4-1 lead and eventually lost, the host squad put things away this time with three third-period goals in less than four minutes. Aberdeen received goals from five different players on the night: Joseph Sullivan, Ryan Doner, Steve Obarzanek, Bob Bruski and Cory Ward. The Wings got a big effort from Frederick Leisner in goal. He stopped all 32 of the shots he faced.  Lane Mahoney and Mack Ohnsted each finished with a pair of assists on the night.

Topeka 4 @ Odessa 2

(Story courtesy of Lee Scheide, Odessa American)  Topeka got goals from four different players and the Odessa Jackalopes could only match two of them as the RoadRunners skated away with a 4-2 victory Thursday night at Ector County Coliseum.Chad Hennum and Jalen Krogman scored for the Jackalopes, who dropped to 5-7-2 on the season with the loss. Ben Bahe, Sean Gaffney, Robbie Davis and Kyle Sharkey all tallied for Topeka (9-5-2), with Davis and Sharkey scoring power-play goals. Both teams battled through the first 15 minutes, with chances at both ends of the ice, before the RoadRunners found the back of the net behind Jackalopes goaltender Justin Davis on a shot off a faceoff win. Taking the draw in the right circle, Topeka’s Sean Gaffney drew the puck back to Bahe, who was standing above the right hash marks and Bahe wasted no time snapping a shot past Davis inside the right post with 4:16 to play before the first break. Davis made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors with his goal at the 8:08 mark of the season period, but Hennum potted his goal 3:10 later when he redirected a shot by Bryan Mitchell from the left point inside the right post, cutting the RoadRunners’ lead in half.  It was Hennum’s fifth goal in the past three games and his seventh overall, all coming at Ector County Coliseum.  Topeka, however, had the answer a few minutes later when Gaffney finished a rush up the ice with a shot from the top of the slot that beat Davis on his blocker (right) side with 5:09 remaining in the second period.
