Friday Finals: Brown Bears move into 1st place in the West

Kenai River 5 @ Dawson Creek 3 - The Kenai River Brown Bears defeated the host Dawson Creek (British Columbia) Rage 5-3 on Friday to take over sole possession of first place in the North American Hockey League West Division.  Captain Brett Lubanski bagged a hat trick to lead the Bears. Kenai River outshot the Rage 38-29, taking advantage of eight power-play chances to Dawson Creek's three. The Bears scored three times on the power play, while the Rage had one goal on the man advantage.  Carter Page gave Dawson Creek a 1-0 lead in the first, but Lubanski answered on an assist from Alex Frere.  The Rage started strong in the second period, going up 3-1 on goals by Scott Fellnermayr and Ryan Matthews.  Kenai River came back to tie on two power-play goals. Lubanski scored on assists by Ryan Walker and Austin Sture, and Ramsey scored on assists from Raymond Stenehjem and Miikael Arkimo.  With 56 seconds left in the second period, Kenai River took its first lead of the game when Frere scored on an assist from Lubanski and Sture.  The Brown Bears then stayed out of the box in the third period while the Rage committed three penalties. Goalie Austin Severson made the last seven of his 26 saves and Lubanski finished off the Rage with an empty-net, power-play goal with three seconds left. Frere and Bobby Murphy assisted. Boxscore

Kalamazoo 3 @ Port Huron 5 – Ian Miller had two goals as the Fighting Falcons won their 5th straight game to move into a 1st place tie in the North Division with the home win over Kalamazoo. Boxscore

Michigan 1 @ Jamestown 2 – Joe Ballmer made 31 saves and Wes Elrod had the game-winning goal as Jamestown handed Michigan their 6th straight loss. Boxscore

Odessa 2 @ Amarillo 4 – The Bulls maintained the league’s best record with a 4-2 win at home over the Jacks.  Matt Johnson and Brooks Behling each had a goal and assist in the win, the Bulls 7th straight.  Boxscore

Bismarck 1 @ Coulee Region 3 – Aaron Davis made 38 saves and Tyler Klein scored twice as the Chill topped the Bobcats 3-1, snapping the Bobcats four-game winning streak. Boxscore

Topeka 4 @ Springfield 2 – Ryan White factored in on all four RoadRunners goals with a goal and three assists and Josh Hillegas made 19 saves, as the RoadRunners won, outshooting Springfield, 47-21. Boxscore

Alexandria 5 @ Austin 1 – Jacob Meyers had his shutout bid snapped late in the 3rd period, but still made 23 saves as the Blizzard got three-point nights from Tucker Coborn and Reid Sturos in the road win. Boxscore

St. Louis 5 @ Janesville 2 – Garret Peterson scored twice and Joseph Birmingham had three points as the Bandits increased their Midwest Division lead with a road win over the Jets.  Boxscore

Corpus Christi 4 @ Wichita Falls 1 – Anthony Stolarz continued his hot play in goal, stopping 42 of 43 shots as the IceRays got goals from four different players, increasing their win streak to six games.  Boxscore

Minot 1 @ Aberdeen 4 – Cory Ward had two goals and an assist and Macus Zelzer made 23 saves as the Wings recorded a home win over Minot, who got their lone goal from Jadin Martin. Boxscore

Texas 7 @ New Mexico 8 (SO) – The Mustangs scored three power play goals in the final minute of regulation to send the game to a shootout, where they won on the 6th shooter. Boxscore

Wenatchee 1 @ Alaska 3 – The Avalanche snapped the Wild’s four-game winning streak thanks to 30 saves from Nick Kulmanovsky and two power play goals. Boxscore
