Outlaws' Jundt decides on Bemidji State

March 6, 2008

The North Iowa Outlaws have announced that defenseman Tyler Jundt has verbally committed to play for Bemidji State University (CHA) next season.

The Williston, N.D., native becomes the first Outlaw this season to commit to a Division I school, joining his two-year teammate Shea Walters, who committed to Bemidji State last season while playing with Jundt in Green Bay.

“Tyler is a very deserving player and has worked a long time to earn a Division I scholarship,” Outlaws coach Dave Boitz said. “I think he has all the attributes to play and succeed at the next level.  Bemidji is getting a great player and young man.”

For Jundt, the chance to play NCAA Division I hockey is a dream come true, and he hopes the Beavers will be successful in their bid to join the WCHA, considered one of the best conferences in college hockey.

“I grew up in North Dakota, so playing for the Fighting Sioux was always a dream, but a program like Bemidji State is second to none,” Jundt added. “I’m looking forward to playing for the Beavers and against some tough competition.”

Jundt added that the coaching staff, campus, school and team all factored into his decision and, like many before him, it’s nice to get the burden off his back.

“I went there on a visit last week and really enjoyed myself,” he said. “My visit with the coaching staff was great and I really liked the direction of the program. The rest of the visit with players, school officials and just walking around the campus made my decision easy.”

This season, Jundt, a NAHL Top Prospects Tournament participant, has seven goals for 17 points after 44 games.  The 20-year-old is also a plus-18.

“It’s just nice to know where I’ll be next season and that will help me focus more for what we want to accomplish this season as a team,” Jundt said.

Jundt is the fourth Outlaw to commit to a Division I school while playing for North Iowa, joining Jay Clark (Army), Bryant Skarda (Army) and Steve Mcleod (AIC).
