Sunday Wrap-Up: Mountain Cats stun Vengeance

Cincinnati Swords 6 @ Chicago Jr. Bulldogs 7 (OT): After two goals to tie the game in the third period it was Zac Edwards who scored the game winning overtime goal to give the Chicago Jr. Bulldogs a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Swords. It was a tightly contested game that saw neither team acquire more than a two-goal lead during the high scoring affair. The Jr. Bulldogs third period comeback started with a successful penalty shot from Matt Kostopoulos who beat Cincinnati goaltender Artie Haase. Luke Morin tied the game up less than two minutes later off a nice pass from Ryan Maksimovic. Finally, it was Edwards who completed the comeback scoring in the extra frame to give the Jr. Bulldogs the sweep on the weekend. Cincinnati forward RJ Marshall added his fourth and fifth goals of the season beating Michael Krch, who had sixty saves picking up the victory in the pipes for the Bulldogs. Boxscore

Michigan Mountain Cats 3 @ Pittsburgh Vengeance 1: Walker Bass stopped 36 Vengeance shots to carry the Michigan Mountain Cats to a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Vengeance. This was the first victory for the Mountain Cats over Pittsburgh in four attempts on the season. Bass, who improved his win total to two for the season, avenged a loss earlier in the season to Pittsburgh in which he allowed eight goals. Pittsburgh forward Lukas Friberger scored the only Vengeance goal bringing him to a total of six straight games recording a point. Max Vance and John Arms were sparkplugs for the Michigan offense both putting a goal and an assist on the score sheet. Boxscore

St. Louis Jr. Blues 2 @ Peoria Mustangs 3 (SO): The Peoria Mustangs rode the 31 save performance from Marc Hayton to split the weekend series with the St. Louis Jr. Blues defeating them 3-2 in a shootout. Marshall Gevers let a hard snap shot go that beat St. Louis goalie Cooper Cothran over the pad to score the decisive shootout goal. The teams traded goals in the first two periods with Christian Argyros scoring for St. Louis in the first and Austin Ziakas scoring for Peoria in the second period. In the third the teams each scored a marker and it led to the decisive shootout. St. Louis goaltender Cothran had his highest save total of the season stopping 38 shots in the loss. Boxscore

Granite City Lumberjacks 3 @ Minnesota Flying Aces 2: Aidan Verbeke scored his league leading 14th goal of the season to complete the Granite City Lumberjacks 3-2 come from behind victory over the Minnesota Flying Aces. Verbeke, the Lumberjacks top goal scorer from last season, has now scored a goal in his past seven games. The Flying Aces jumped out a two goal lead as forward Jake Mullendore scored two goals in a span of a minute in the first period. The Lumberjacks slowly chipped away at the lead until Verbeke cashed in at 16:54 of the final period to seal the victory. Minnesota Flying Aces goaltender Mike Stumpf was sensational in defeat stopping 34 Granite City shots. Boxscore
