November 10, 2013

Topeka Capitals 6 @ Dallas Jr. Stars 2: The Topeka Capitals found their groove with the man advantage scoring three times to beat the Dallas Jr. Stars 6-2. The Jr. Stars used the home ice advantage as Cam Choate scored a goal just over a minute into the first period. The Capitals didn’t take long to answer as Norman, Oklahoma native Kole Hudson potted the tying mark soon after. Hudson’s play sparked the Capitals and began a streak of five unanswered goals for the Capitals. During that time Yu Hikosaka picked up two more goals on the season to add onto his team leading point total. Rutger Kesling scored a goal for the Jr. Stars just before the teams went into the locker rooms for the third period hoping to give the Jr. Stars a comeback opportunity but it was goaltender Mike McElroy that took the intermission to refocus and shutout the Stars in the final frame earning the victory. Metro Jets 6 @ Cincinnati Swords 1: The Metro Jets found the net early and often scoring six unanswered tallies to beat the Cincinnati Swords 6-1. RJ Marshall scored on the power play for the Swords after Metro Jets forward Kevin Shand went off on a kneeing penalty to give the Swords an early advantage. Shand would make up for his penalty later in the period as he scored a goal of his own to tie the game up at 1. This was the start of a huge game for Shand as he ended up with two goals and three assists on the night. Metro Jets goaltender Kameron Limburg had a big night in net picking up the win after stopping 32 Swords shots. Boxscore

Pittsburgh Vengeance 6 @ Battle Creek Jr. Revolution 1: The Pittsburgh Vengeance marched into Battle Creek, Michigan to take on the Jr. Revolution and went home with a 6-1 victory. The Vengeance used a strong first period to go up two goals early on the home team but three minutes into the 2nd period Battle Creek cut the lead to one after a goal from Alex Drulia. After Battle Creek received a 5-minute major penalty the Vengeance took advantage of the opportunity getting goals from Lukas Friberger and Kevin Kenny, his second of the night. The Vengeance went 30% on the power play during the game picking up an additional tally later in the game from Chris McCambridge. Boxscore

Wisconsin Whalers 3 @ Peoria Mustangs 4 (SO): The Peoria Mustangs escaped a close game with the Wisconsin Whalers tying the game up late and then winning in the shoot out 4-3 to the enjoyment of the home crowd. The Mustangs gave the Whalers all they could handle in the opening frame getting goals from Brennan Anderson and Andrew Scofield opening up a two-goal lead. The Whalers cut the lead to one after a shorthanded tally in the 2nd period but it was during the 2nd intermission the Whalers received a jolt of energy. Kaleb Morley and Mitch Riese both beat Peoria goaltender Marc Hayton to give the Whalers the lead late. Cue the heroics from Brennan Anderson as the Peoria forward found the back of the net for the second time scoring with under two minutes left to tie the game. During the shoot out the shooters had the advantage both scoring on three of the first four rounds but once goaltender Hayton stopped Jon Skarlis it gave Brendan Murphy the chance to win the game for the Mustangs and he delivered netting the winner. Flint Junior Generals 4 @ Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks 2: In a tough competitive back and forth game it was two 3rd period goals that served as the difference for the Flint Junior Generals, who picked up a 4-2 victory over the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks. The Lumberjacks and the Junior Generals traded goals in the first two frames with Flint scoring first both times and Cleveland answering back in a minute or less to take the game back to a tie score. It wasn’t until the 3rd period when Chris Skordilis and Caleb Ganelli both connected for goals less then 30 seconds apart giving the Junior Generals the insurance goal they had been searching for all game. Cleveland goaltender Jospeh Moza was once again spectacular in defeat stopping 34 out of 38 shots thrown his way. Boxscore

St. Louis Jr. Blues 2 @ Chicago Jr. Bulldogs 4: Matt Blaszkiewicz scored 20 seconds into the game for Chicago and they would not give up the lead the rest of the game as the Jr. Bulldogs won the game 4-2 picking up a huge weekend sweep of the visiting Jr. Blues. The two teams trading power play goals with the Jr. Bulldogs getting one from Trevor Foley and the Jr. Blues from Tommy Heinzman highlighted the 2nd period. Adam Roeder, who later picked up a power play goal of his own, assisted Heinzman’s tally. Matt Kostopoulos added to an earlier assist picking up two goals in the 3rd period to seal the game for Chicago. Not to be forgotten the #1 star of the night once again went to Chicago goaltender Michael Krch. Krch, coming off an NA3HL season high 67 save night, gave the hometown fans an almost as impressive encore stopping 56 shots and only giving up goals when his team was on the penalty kill.
