Waunakee, Wisconsin native Eric Behrend, 19, helped the North Iowa Bulls to a weekend home-and-home split with the Twin City Steel, and provided much of the offensive spark for the team. On Friday, the 6’0/180 lbs. forward recorded two goals and an assist in a 5-1 win over the Steel. His two goals were the final two of the game, helping secure the win for North Iowa. On Saturday, he recorded another goal in a 9-2 loss at Twin City, ending up with three goals and one helper for the week. Behrend ranks 3rd on the Bulls in scoring this season with 23 points in 29 games played. “Eric has been one of our most consistent players as of late,” said North Iowa head coach Todd Sanden. “He has improved his skating, his speed and has adapted to the level that is the 3HL. He has been very effective in all situations.”
Kyle Bonstrom, 19, recorded two goals and assist in two games this past weekend as Minnesota recorded a win and a loss. On Saturday, the Eagan, Minnesota native had the lone goal for the Flying Aces in their 4-1 loss against division-leading Granite City. A night later, the 6’0/200lbs. forward had a shorthanded goal and assist, as Minnesota beat Twin City on the road, 6-4. For the year, Bonstrom is 5th in scoring for the Flying Aces with 19 points in 26 games. “Kyle was hurt at the 3HL Showcase and hadn’t played since then, so it was nice to see him back in the line-up and being productive,” said Flying Aces head coach Craig Larson. “He has worked very hard to get back to 100%. He possesses a great mental and physical part of the game and does a great job at using his physicality to create offensive chances.”

McCarthy, 20, was instrumental in the Jr. Flames sweep of their rival Peoria Mustangs this past weekend. On Saturday, the Scottsville, Michigan native had a hand in all three Quad City goals as they beat the Mustangs, 3-1. McCarthy (6’0/190) scored twice, including the game-winning goal and added an assist in the win. The next day, McCarthy scored the game-winning goal again, this time late in the 2nd period on the power play as Quad City swept the Mustangs thanks to a 2-1 win. The big weekend by McCarthy helped him become Quad City’s scoring leader with 27 points. He is also tied for the team lead in goals with 14. He has already eclipsed last year’s point totals. “Luke he has played very the well the last couple of weeks,” said Jr. Flames head coach Tom McDermott. “He does the little things to be successful. His recent success is a result of good hockey awareness and being in good position.”
This is the third time this season that Fink, 19, has been honored as of the 3HL’s 3 stars of the week. This past week, Fink helped the 1st place Lumberjacks to a weekend road sweep of the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins. The New Berlin, Wisconsin native recorded seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in the two wins. On Saturday, Fink had a goal and three assists which included an assist on the game-winning goal as Cleveland beat Pittsburgh, 6-4. The next day, Fink (5’11/175) added two goals and an assist in a 7-5 win. Despite being 3rd on the team in scoring with 39 points in 30 games played, Fink is in the top 10 in 3HL scoring. “Kyle had a huge weekend and with our top scorer out of the line-up, had a significant impact in both games,” said Cleveland head coach Bob Jacobson. “Kyle is playing the game the right way and not trying to do too much. He is making excellent decisions and getting in good position to score.”
Meadows, 18, backstopped the Quad City Jr. Flames to a weekend sweep of the Peoria Mustangs. The Bettendorf, Iowa native won both games for Quad City, giving up just a goal in each and stopping a combined 58 of 60 shots for a 96.7% save percentage. On Saturday, Meadows (5’10/180) allowed just a single goal and stopped 25 of 26 Mustangs shots as Quad City beat Peoria, 3-1. On Sunday, Meadows was even better, allowing just a single 2nd period goal on 34 Peoria shots as the Jr. Flames earned the sweep with a close 2-1 win. Even though Meadows has a goals against average of over 3.00, he ranks 6th in the 3HL with a 91.5% save percentage. “Mike has been solid as a rock for us,” said Quad City head coach Tom McDermott. “He had previously struggled against Peoria, so it was good to see him pick up a few wins. Minnesota Flying Aces forward Parker Tomczyk, 20, is second in the 3HL in goals with 22 and a big reason why was his play this past week earning him the #1 star in the 3HL. In five games this past week, the Mosinee, Wisconsin native recorded 12 points, including eight goals and four assists. 10 of those points came at the annual 3HL Showcase, where Minnesota posted a 3-1-0 record. Tomczyk (5’8/165) began the week with a goal in a 4-1 win over Queen City. The next day he sparkled with a hat-trick and three assists for a six point night in an 8-3 win over Michigan. On Tuesday, he recorded another goal in a 4-3 win against the Metro Jets. On the final day of the Showcase, he registered two goals in a close 4-3 loss against Flint. Tomczyk rounded out the week with a goal and assist in a 5-2 win against Twin City on Sunday. “Parker has figured out his game and has remained consistent all season long,” said Flying Aces head coach Craig Larson. “He is playing better team hockey, giving up the puck when he needs to, shooting when he needs to and has remained a very hard-working player.”
The Flint Jr. Generals went undefeated at the 3HL Showcase and have now won eight straight games and one of the biggest reasons is the play of goaltender Ben Myers. Myers, 18, was a perfect 4-0-0 in the games he played in last week as he posted a 1.95 goals against average and stopped 103 of 111 combined shots. Myers (6’2/195) played in three of the four games at the 3HL Showcase. The Wauwatosa, Wisconsin native posted wins in the Showcase against Peoria, Chicago and shut down the high-powered Granite City offense with a 35-save performance. On Saturday, he made 25 saves in a 5-1 road win at Michigan. “Before the Showcase he beat Cleveland, who is a very good team, and that gave everyone on the team a lot confidence, especially Ben,” said Flint head coach Jeff Worlton. “He was the biggest difference in all the games. It is just one of those things… once he gets hot he has taken it and run with it. He is playing with good rebound control and a positive demeanor. He has put in his time to try and improve on a daily basis.”
Evan Weiss, 20, played in three games this past week and the White Bear Lake, Minnesota native put up some phenomenal numbers. He helped lead Twin City to the 3HL Showcase title by posting shutouts in both games on the final two days of competition. On Tuesday, he stopped 30 shots as the Steel edged the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks, 1-0. The next day, Weiss was equally as good as he stopped all 30 shots for his second straight shutout in a 5-0 blanking of the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins. Weiss (5’9/165) had his shutout streak of over 135+ minutes snapped on Sunday as he and Steel fell to the Minnesota Flying Aces on the road, but not before making another 30 saves. For the week, Weiss posted a 2-1-0 record, a 1.35 goals against average and stopped a combined 90 of 94 total shots for a 95.7% save percentage. “Evan was a big reason we had great success at the 3HL Showcase,” said Steel head coach Stu Ronsberg. “I think not only did he play very well, but he did it against some quality opponents.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical order): Ethan Baker, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Matt Bartels, goaltender, North Iowa Bulls – Cameron Bazin, forward, Metro Jets – Matt Grove, goaltender, Granite City Lumberjacks – Chris Hellebuyck, forward, Metro Jets – Marshall Helton, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Trace Jablin, forward, St. Louis Jr. Blues – Stephen Langford, forward, Minnesota Flying Aces – Alexander Larson, goaltender, Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks – Peter Lindblad, forward, Granite City Lumberjacks – Mike Meadows, goaltender, Quad City Jr. Flames – Ken Miloser, defenseman, Flint Jr. Generals – Clint Steinmeyer, goaltender, St. Louis Jr. Blues – Kegan Storjohann, forward, Twin City Steel – Toms Taurins, forward, Quad City Jr. Flames.

A big reason why St. Louis is in 1st place in the 3HL’s Central Division is the play of defenseman Johnny Mueller. Mueller, 17, recorded five points this past week (2 goals, 3 assists) as the Jr. Blues split a pair of weekend road games at Peoria. On Saturday, the St. Peter, Missouri native had an assist in a 3-2 loss. On Sunday, Mueller recorded two goals (including the game-winner) and two assists as St. Louis rebound to defeat Peoria, 7-3. Mueller is second on the Jr. Blues is scoring with 21 points in just 12 games played. “Johnny played a big role in our win on Sunday and has been a real nice addition to the team,” said Jr. Blues head coach JP Beilsten. “He plays a big role at both ends of the ice and we rarely worry about his positioning and ability to transition from defense to offense.”
For the second time in as many weeks and third time overall this season, Granite City forward Peter Lindblad has been honored as one of the league’s three stars. Lindblad, 20, made his case this past week, scoring five goals in three games as the Lumberjacks went 1-2-0 for the week. After being held scoreless in Wednesday’s loss to Twin City, Lindblad erupted for four goals on Friday (including the game-winner) in a 5-2 win at Minnesota. On Saturday, the Benson, Minnesota native scored the Lumberjacks lone goal in a 3-1 loss at North Iowa. Lindblad leads Granite City in scoring with 34 points in 27 games played and is tied for the 3HL league lead in goals with 17. “There is no doubt that Peter has the hot stick right now,” said Lumberjacks head coach Brad Willner. “He has a knack for scoring and is giving himself quality scoring chances.”
In a weekend home split with Pittsburgh, Queen City forward Damien Lona, 18, did most of his damage in one game, earning him 3rd star honors. In Queen City’s 4-2 win on Saturday, Lona contributed on all four goals with one goal and three assists as the Steam topped the Jr. Penguins. Although shutout the next night by Pittsburgh, 3-0, the Crittenden, Kentucky native leads the Steam in points with 21 points in 22 games played. “Damien is a player that makes his linemates and teammates better,” said Queen City head coach Don Biggs. “He has great vision on the ice. He thinks pass first and is very unselfish with the puck.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical order): Ryan Basgall, defenseman, St. Louis Jr. Blues – Richard Jansson, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Sean Keating, goaltender, Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins – Steve Klisz, forward, Metro Jets – Alex Lazarski, goaltender, Queen City Steam – Michael Mikulan, forward, Peoria Mustangs – Ben Myers, goaltender, Flint Jr. Generals – Matt Raiola, defenseman, Granite City Lumberjacks – Will Shier, defenseman, Metro Jets – Joe Skrzynski, forward, Toledo Cherokee – Patrick Smiatacz, forward, Toledo Cherokee – Nico Vecchio, forward, Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins.

This is the second time this season that Peter Lindblad, 20, has been honored as the 3HL’s #1 star of the week. He earned the honors this week thanks to a five-point week and two more convincing wins from the Lumberjacks. On Friday, the native of Benson, Minnesota recorded a hat-trick, which included an even-strength, shorthanded and power play goal in a 7-0 road win against Twin City. Saturday, Lindblad chipped in with two assists, including one on the game-tying goal early in the 3rd period in a 7-3 home win over Minnesota. Lindblad has been on a tear the last 10 games, scoring in all but one and registering 17 points in that time span. “Peter had a great weekend without one of his regular linemates and has stayed remarkably consistent,” remarked Lumberjacks head coach Brad Willner.
Although he appeared in just one game over the weekend, Joe Olen, 18, was perfect in his performance as he and the Hitmen shutout the Quad City Jr. Flames on Sunday, 2-0. Olen made 10 of his 21 total saves in the 2nd period and shut the door on all six Jr. Flames power plays. Sunday’s performance continues a string of recent strong outings for the Lake Zurich, Illinois native, who has allowed just two goals in his last three games. “Joe has been very steady all season long,” said Hitmen head coach Brent Dolan. “He doesn’t have bad games and one of his best attributes is his consistency. The guys play with a lot of confidence when he is in goal.”
Michigan Mountain Cats forward Kyle Parker has five points this season, but four of those points came this past weekend as the 18-year-old from Metamora, Michigan scored two goals and added two assists for four points in Michigan’s weekend sweep of Battle Creek. Parker’s first goal of the season came during the Mountain Cats win on Friday night. On Saturday night, he added another goal and two assists as Michigan completed the sweep over Battle Creek. “Kyle works very hard and is a kid who comes to play every night,” said Mountain Cats head coach Chad Grills. “It is nice to see him rewarded because he puts in the time and is a great leader.”

A third of Portner’s season offensive output came in this past weekend alone as the forward from Andover, Minnesota had two goals and eight assists for 10 points as Granite City won all three of their games this past weekend over Peoria and Quad City. On Friday, Portner, 19, recorded two assists, including one on the game-winning goal in a 7-0 win over the Mustangs. The next night, Portner recorded four assists, again including the game-winning goal, in a 6-1 win over Peoria. Portner saved his best game of the weekend for last as on Sunday he recorded two goals and two assists for four points in a 7-2 home win over Quad City. For the season, Portner is tied for 4th in league scoring with 30 points and leads the Lumberjacks in points. “He is making great plays and it really helps that he plays with a guy like Tyler Cayemberg, who can put the puck in the net. They are a lethal combination right now,” said Lumberjacks head coach Brad Willner. “Taylor sees the ice really well and has really stepped his game up as of late.”
Keating, 17, came up huge for Pittsburgh in their weekend road sweep of the Flint Jr. Generals. Keating was in goal for both games, both of which Pittsburgh won by identical 2-1 scores. On Saturday, the Smithtown, New York native allowed just one goal on 41 shots as Pittsburgh topped Flint in overtime. On Sunday, Keating was just as good, again allowing just one goal (which came on the power play) on 24 Flint shots. For the weekend, Keating stopped 63 of a total 65 shots for a 96.9% save percentage and a miniscule .96 goals against average. “I thought that Sean was very solid positionally,” said Pittsburgh head coach Brian Cersosimo. “He is still getting comfortable and adjusting to junior hockey life in the 3HL. He is improving by the week and hopefully it is something that continues the remainder of the season.”
Kelly, 19, helped the Toledo Cherokee win two more games over the weekend to widen their lead in the 3HL’s North Division. On Friday the Wilton Manors, Florida native recorded three assists, including assisting on the game-winning goal, in Toledo’s 6-3 win at home over Michigan. The next night, Kelly scored a goal and assisted on another as Toledo came up with a big 5-3 road win against the Metro Jets. For the 2011-12 season, Kelly has recorded 24 points in just 18 games played. “I thought Ryan had a great weekend and really gelled well with his new linemates, and that really helped him get back on track,” said Toledo head coach Scott Syring. “I think he is taking advantage of his opportunities and is proving that he is a legitimate NCAA Division III prospect.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical order): Cameron Brown, forward, Peoria Mustangs – Tyler Cayemberg, forward, Granite City Lumberjacks – Cody Damon, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Schuyler Ferguson, goaltender, Michigan Mountain Cats – Austin Fletcher, forward, Toledo Cherokee – Matt Hughes, goaltender, Battle Creek Jr. Revolution – James Koonce, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Abe Liebel, forward, Quad City Jr. Flames – David Mnatsyan, defenseman, Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins – Jim Odom, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Daniel Rosse, forward, St. Louis Jr. Blues – Trevor Voelker, forward, Queen City Steam – Josh Wentz, forward, Peoria Mustangs.

Fernsler, 19, had his best weekend stretch of the year helping the Jr. Blues to three out of a possible four points during their weekend series against Quad City. On Saturday, Fernsler stopped all 31 shots sent his way, including shutting down all seven Jr. Flames power plays en route to his first shutout of the season in a 4-0 win. On Sunday, the Balwin, Missouri native again made 31 saves through regulation in overtime and managed to stop five of six shooters in the shootout, but it wasn’t enough in a close 3-2 shootout loss for the Jr. Blues, earning them just the one point. "Mitch had a great weekend for us, pitching a 31-save shutout on Saturday and saving 31 of 33 shots and 5 of 6 in the shootout on Sunday,” said St. Louis head coach J.P. Beilsten. “Mitch was a very big part of us getting three out of four points against a really tough Quad City team that put 11 goals in on us the weekend before."
Since being acquired in a trade back on October 9th, the Mustangs have been playing their best hockey of the season thanks in part to 19-year-old netminder, Michael Parda. Parda, who hails from Waukesha, Wisconsin, played very well in a weekend split at Chicago against the Hitmen. On Saturday, Parda recorded 33 saves for his first shutout of the season in a close 1-0 win. The next night, Parda was almost equally as good, making 31 saves in a close 2-1 loss against the Hitmen. Parda’s numbers with the Mustangs this season are staggering. He has a goals against average of 1.76 and a save percentage of 94.9% in four games. “Since we traded for Michael, we are 5-1 and have been playing really well as a team,” said Mustangs GM Jean Guy Trudel. “I think Michael brings a lot of leadership to the table. He is vocal on the ice and gives everyone playing in front of him a lot more confidence.”
Cleveland continues to have the best record in the 3HL at 17-1-0 and a big reason why has been the play of 19-year-old forward Kyle Fink. This past weekend was no exception as Cleveland swept a weekend road set at Michigan. In those two games, the New Berlin, Wisconsin native had three goals (including one game-winner) and two assists for five points, helping the Jr. Jacks to the weekend sweep. “Kyle has been taking advantage of his opportunities and I think that has improved his confidence,” said Cleveland head coach Bob Jacobson. “Best of all, we think he can get even better as the season goes along.” On Friday, Fink had a goal (game-winner) and an assist. Lindblad, 20, had a week to remember as the forward from Benson, Minnesota recorded seven points (5 goals, 2 assists) in three games helping the Lumberjacks stay in 1st place in the West Division as they went 2-1-0 last week. On Friday, Lindblad scored two goals, including the game-winner in a 6-3 win at Twin City. The next night, he scored a power play goal early in the 3rd period to briefly give the Lumberjacks a 3-2 lead before North Iowa scored two late goals to edge Granite City, 4-3. Lindblad saved his best game of the weekend for last as on Sunday he scored two goals and added two assists in a convincing 8-4 win at Minnesota. “It is great when your captain gets rolling, because the rest of the guys take notice and try to follow suit,” said Lumberjacks head coach Brad Wilner. “It is tough to get the puck away from Peter and as long as he stays consistent, we should have a good chance for continued success.”
Collins, who just turned 17 a month ago, is making quite the statement in his rookie season as he leads the Mountain Cats in scoring with 20 points in 11 games played. On Friday, the Lapeer, Michigan native had a hat-trick and two assists for a five point night in a 9-0 win over Battle Creek. The next night, he duplicated his five point game, but this time scoring one goal and adding four assists in a 10-4 win over the Jr. Revolution. In total for the weekend, Collins had four goals and six assists for 10 points. “From the start of training camp he has really been on of one of our best players,” said Michigan head coach Chad Grills. “He is an incredible skater and it’s nice to see a player that young be as mature on the ice as Zach is. He has a very bright hockey future ahead of him.”
Meadows, 18, was in goal for both Quad City wins at home against St. Louis on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, despite the 7-0 score, the Bettendorf, Iowa native had plenty of saves to make, stopping all 31 shots that came his way for his first shutout of the season. Sunday, Meadows stopped 29 of 32 shots through regulation and then in the shootout managed to stop seven of eight shooters, earning Quad City their seventh win of the season to bring the Jr. Flames within a point of 1st place St. Louis. “Mike really kept us in the game the first night in the 1st period when the game was still close, which says everything about the team maintaining its confidence,” said Quad City head coach Tom McDermott. “The second game, he was the biggest reason we had a chance to win in the end and his performance in the shootout speaks to the confidence he has and how far he has come since last season.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical order): Doug Andrews, forward, Metro Jets – Casey Barile, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Matthew Bartels, goaltender, North Iowa Bulls – Anthony Caroselli, forward, Quad City Jr. Flames – James Koonce, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Alex Larson, goaltender, Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks – Matt Leon, goaltender, Queen City Steam – Michael Mikulan, forward, Peoria Mustangs - James Odom, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Michael Parda, goaltender, Peoria Mustangs - Jared Ramstead, forward, North Iowa Bulls – Shane Reese, forward, Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks – Austyn Roudebush, goaltender, Toledo Cherokee – Will Shier, defenseman, Metro Jets – Joe Skrzynski, forward, Toledo Cherokee – Tyler Stoller, forward, Granite City Lumberjacks.
Week of October 25, 2011

It was a week to remember for Berardinelli, who is one of the youngest players in the 3HL, having just turned 16-years-old. The forward from Export, Pennsylvania helped his team to a weekend road sweep of the Michigan Mountain Cats this past weekend with two goals and three assists good for five points during the two games. On Friday, Berardinelli scored a goal and added three assists, including assisting on the game-winning goal in a 6-3 win. Saturday, Berardinelli scored Pittsburgh’s fourth goal in a close 7-5 win. “The best thing about Alex is that he can play in all situations at a young age,” said Jr. Penguins head coach Brian Cersosimo. “He is a key component to this team and is learning to do the little things that will make him a successful junior hockey player.”
Fink, 19, helped Cleveland stay atop of the East Division with the 3HL’s best record, as the Jr. Lumberjacks took a pair of weekend road games at Queen City. What is more impressive is that both goals that Fink scored on the weekend were the respective game-winners for Cleveland in both games. Saturday, the New Berlin, Wisconsin native scored the eventual game-winning goal on the power play early in the 2nd period in a 6-1 win. On Sunday, he again recorded the game-winning goal along with two assists to cap his four-point weekend. Part of his inspiration may be because Kyle’s sister, who serves in the US Army, was in town for two weeks on break from her service in Afghanistan. “Kyle can put the puck in the net and more importantly, he is doing it at key times in the game,” said Cleveland head coach Bob Jacobson. “He has been playing well and has continued to contribute from Day 1.”
Grove, 20, appeared in all three Lumberjacks games this past weekend, allowing just one goal in the process, as he continues to lead the 3HL in goals against average for the season. Friday, the Crookston, Minnesota native stopped all 14 shots in a 3-0 shutout win over Quad City. On Saturday, Grove made a relief appearance, not allowing a goal in a 4-3 loss at Peoria. On Sunday, Grove allowed just one goal on 15 shots, but it would not be enough as the Lumberjacks were edged by the Mustangs, 1-0. For the weekend, Grove played almost 130 minutes of hockey, allowing just one goal and stopping 29 of 30 shots. “We have had some trouble scoring and Matt has really helped us stay in games,” said Lumberjacks head coach Brad Wilner. “He plays the position well with good angles and has really had a nice start to the season.”
Other players nominated were (alphabetical order): Matt Bartels, goaltender, North Iowa Bulls – Andrew Carlson, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Josh Foster, forward, Michigan Mountain Cats – Josh Kestner, forward, Flint Jr. Generals – Mike Meadows, goaltender, Quad City Jr. Flames – Evan Mulvihill, defenseman, Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins – Dominic Orlando, goaltender, Flint Jr. Generals – Christos Papaioannou, forward, Toledo Cherokee – Taylor Portner, forward, Granite City Lumberjacks – Jared Ramstead, forward, North Iowa Bulls – James Steele, forward, Toledo Cherokee.

Tomczyk, 20, recorded seven points (6 goals, 1 assist) in three games played this past week, as the Minnesota Flying Aces posted a 2-1-0 record during the week. After being held scoreless in Friday’s 1-0 win over Granite City, Tomczyk went off for two hat-tricks in back-to-back games. On Saturday, the Mosinee, Wisconsin, native had three goals in a close 7-6 loss at home against St. Louis. However, Tomczyk saved his best hockey for the final game of the weekend on Sunday when he recorded an even strength, power play and shorthanded goal, plus an assist in Minnesota’s 4-2 win over the Jr. Blues. “Parker has been as solid as they come and has worked very hard to get where he is at,” said Minnesota head coach Craig Larson. “He logs a lot of ice time because he can play two-way hockey and has a team-first mentality.”
Busse, 17, recorded at least a point in all three of the Steel wins this past weekend, which also all came on the road against Quad City and Chicago. On Friday, the St. Paul, Minnesota, native had a goal in the Steel’s 7-3 win over the Jr. Flames. The next night, Busse recorded a hat-trick and added an assist as the Steel once again bested Quad City by a score of 5-3. On Sunday, he recorded an assist in a 5-1 win at Chicago giving him four goals and two assists during the three-game weekend. Busse currently leads all Steel scorers with 14 points in 13 games played.
Carter, 20, played in just one game this past weekend, but it was one to remember as the forward from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, recorded four goals and an assist for a five-point game in Flint’s 11-1 win over Battle Creek on Friday.
