North Iowa defenseman Petronack signs NAHL tender

April 12, 2019
The North Iowa Bulls, proud members of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL), are pleased to announce that defenseman Joey Petronack has signed a North American Hockey League (NAHL) tender agreement with the Maryland Black Bears of the NAHL's East Division for the 2019-20 season.

Petronack is the sixth North Iowa player this season to sign a tender agreement with an NAHL team, and the first to do so since the end of the season on March 30.

Petronack came to North Iowa by way of Hill-Murray High School, where he led the Pioneers to two Minnesota state high school tournament appearances. He began his junior career with one game as a member of the Steinbach Pistons of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League before joining the Bulls at the beginning of October.

The White Bear Lake, Minnesota native posted an assist in a win at St. Louis in his first appearance, merely the first of his 28 points this season with the Bulls, including five goals. He also played in the 2019 NA3HL Top Prospects Tournament for the West Division, recording one assist in three games.

Petronack's production only ramped up in the heat of the postseason, playing in all eight contests in the West Division playoffs and the Fraser Cup national tournament. His seven assists in the postseason was one off of the team lead.

The Black Bears recently finished their first NAHL season, closing the 2018-19 campaign with a 16-37-5-2 record and a sixth-place finish in the East Division.

A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include one tender exclusively used on players from the NA3HL - plus or minus any trades - which became active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held on June 4, 2019.
