North Iowa forward Wahlin signs NAHL tender

January 27, 2020
The North Iowa Bulls, proud members of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL), are excited to announce that forward Lucas Wahlin has signed a North American Hockey League (NAHL) tender agreement with the Kenai River Brown Bears. Wahlin is the first North Iowa player this season to sign an NAHL tender.

Wahlin has already seen time in the NAHL this season, earning a call-up to the Jamestown Rebels during Thanksgiving week and playing five games in Jamestown, remaining with the team through the New Year's holiday.

The former Hill-Murray High School standout has quickly made a name for himself at the junior level, leading the team with 20 goals. His 39 points ranks third on the team, despite missing nine games and the NA3HL Showcase while in the NAHL.

"I think Lucas Wahlin is a no-brainer for the Kenai River Brown Bears right now, with Kevin Murdock as their head coach," said Bulls head coach Todd Sanden. "Kevin is a tremendous developer of skill, and he's a very bright young coach that manages his players very professionally. We're excited that Lucas tendered with Kenai, and we look forward to his success there. We don't see him coming back to the North Iowa Bulls after this year."

His future head coach is as familiar with the Bulls way as anyone - Murdock spent three years on the North Iowa coaching staff, leaving his post as an associate head coach this past spring after being hired by the Brown Bears.

"I've had the opportunity to watch Lucas for the past few seasons prior to him joining the Bulls," said Murdock. "I've always really liked his work ethic and his ability to play at both ends of the ice. The success he's had so far with the Bulls really sealed the deal for us as far as being a guy we wanted to get on board for next season."

A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include one tender exclusively used on players from the NA3HL - plus or minus any trades - which became active on Nov. 1. Tendered players are not eligible for the NAHL draft, which will be held on June 2, 2020.
