Saturday Scores: Colonials sweep tightens Northeast race

Mathias Backstrom helped the Rochester Grizzlies close in on the Central Division title with a 3-1 win over North Iowa on Saturday.

Elmira Jr. Soaring Eagles 1 @ Danbury Colonials 2 - The Danbury Colonials won at home against the Elmira Jr. Soaring Eagles, 2-1. Kolby Donovan of the Colonials scored the first goal of the game in the 2nd period followed closely by a goal from Geoffrey Walton of the Soaring Eagles. Donovan managed another goal for the Colonials with just over a minute left in the 2nd.  Goalie Shane O’Brien of the Colonials made 26 saves of 27 in the win while Andrew Engel of the Soaring Eagles made 34 of 36.
 
New England Stars 2 @ L/A Nordiques 5 - The L/A Nordiques won at home against the New England Stars, 5-2. In the 1st Luke Church of the Stars scored. The Nordiques came back in the 2nd with four goals from Sam Frechette, Joe Clark, Hans Watson, and Bradley McMains. In the 3rd Stars forward Anthony Viola scored before Frechette of the Nordiques could with just :20 left in the game. Nordiques goalie Brogan MacDonald made 31 saves of 33 in the win while Nathan Hadley of the Stars made 42 of 46 in the loss.
 
Maine Wild 1 @ Northeast Generals 5 - The Northeast Generals defeated the Maine Wild at home thanks to a hat trick from Tami Merilainen, 5-1. In the 1st period the Generals had two goals from Tami Merilainen and the only goal of the 2nd came from Merilainen. The Wild got on the board in the 3rd with a goal from Dalton Mcann only for the Generals to answer with two more goals from Kolye Bankauskas and Merilainen. Goalie Raphael Gaughan of the Generals made 14 saves of 15 while Tom Spero of the Wild made 50 of 55. 
 
Peoria Mustangs 3 @ St. Louis Jr. Blues 4 (SO) - The St. Louis Jr. Blues won at home against the Peoria Mustangs, 4-3 in a shootout.  In the 2nd the Jr. Blues managed two goals from Jacob Wiethaupt and Mike Ivory before Chase Mason of the Mustangs could score. Joey Boccardi of the Jr Blues put another up in the 2nd answered quickly by a goal from Zachary Eddington of the Mustangs. In the 3rd Mustangs forward Ian McHenry scored to force the game into overtime, which the Jr. Blues won in a shootout thanks to a goal from Joey Solimando. Jr. Blues goalie William Oliver made 30 saves of 33 while Mustangs goalie Cole Walter made 32 of 35.
 
North Iowa Bulls 1 @ Rochester Grizzlies 3 - The Rochester Grizzlies won against the North Iowa Bulls, 3-1. In the 1st Nic Leisen of the Grizzlies scored. Matthew DeRosa of the Grizzlies put one up in the 2nd. In the 3rd the Bulls got on the board with a goal from Lucas Wahlin just :15 in followed by a goal from Andejs Bogdanovs of the Grizzlies with just :02 left in the game. Grizzlies goalie Mathias Backstrom made 21 saves of 22 in the win while Bulls goalie Joseph Daninger made 31 of 34. 
 
Alexandria Blizzard 15 @ Breezy Point North Stars 1 - The Alexandria Blizzard traveled to defeat the Breezy Point North Stars, 15-1. Ike Taraszewski scored in the 1st for the Blizzard answered by a goal from Braeden Zaste of the North Stars. Nolan Westra scored with just :03 left in the 1st to take the lead. The Blizzard added to their lead in the 2nd with goals from Carter Rieland, Westra, Michal Trejbal, two from Evan Sivets, and a hat trick from Taraszewski. In the 3rd the Blizzard stayed in the lead with five more goals from Westra, Cole Jacobs, Taraszewski, Jack Taylor, and Brandon Connett. Ville Hyttinen goalie for the Blizzard made 11 saves of 12 in the win while North Stars goalies Griffin Foster made 38 of 48 and Jacob Mitchell made 17 of 22.
 
Milwaukee Power 4 @ Wausau RiverWolves 6 - The Milwaukee Power lost to the Wausau RiverWolves, 6-4. The RiverWolves got an early start with a goal from Robert Carlson just under a minute into the 1st, followed by a goal from Brady Rossbach of the Power. The RiverWolves took the lead before the 2nd with a goal from Dane Reimringer. In the 2nd the Power managed two goals from Aaron Cope and Rossbach before Mitchel Idalski of the RiverWolves could score. The RiverWolves added three goals from Sam Baker, Jake Minch, and Hayden Miller before Ryan Hoover of the Power could score. RiverWolves goalie Joseph La Forge made 36 saves of 40 while Power goalie Zach Piehl made 36 of 42.
 
New Ulm Steel 7 @ Willmar WarHawks 3 - The Willmar WarHawks lost against the New Ulm Steel, 7-3. The Steel started off strong in the 1st with two goals from Nick Wieben and Corey Stormer. In the 2nd Wieben and Jacob Halvorson of the Steel scored before Marquez Ginger could get the WarHawks on the board. Marcus Mack managed one more goal for the Steel before the end of the 2nd. Eli Slagter of the WarHawks scored in the 3rd followed by goals from Keegan Bauman and Halvorson of the Steel. Slagter scored for the WarHawks again with just under a minute left in the game.Goalie Zac Hattan of the Steel made 49 saves of 52 while WarHawks goalies Lukas Haugen made 15 of 19 and Luke Weberg made 10 of 13.
 
Yellowstone Quake 2 @ Sheridan Hawks 4 - The Sheridan Hawks won against the Yellowstone Quake, 4-2. Kolten Wright of the Hawks scored in the 2nd followed by two goals from Dylan Rumpke of the Quake. In the 3rd the Hawks added three to their lead with goals from Alex Kesler, Stepan Ruta, and Mike Kocsis.Hawks goalie Luke Fundator made 37 of 39 saves in the win while Quake goalie Michael Allman made 17 of 21 in the loss. 
 
Gillette Wild 1 @ Missoula Junior Bruins 4 - The Missoula Junior Bruins won against the Gillette Wild thanks to a hat trick from Tyler Prince., 4-1. Owen Lee of the Junior Bruins scored the only goal of the 1st period. In the 2nd the Wild tied the game with a shot from Will Dillard. In the 3rd Tyler Prince of the Junior Bruins had a hat trick to end the game. Goalie Seth Daniel of the Junior Bruins made 38 saves of 39 while Luc Haggit of the Wild made 32 of 36.
 
Great Falls Americans 1 @ Bozeman Icedogs 5 - The Bozeman Icedogs won against the Great Falls Americans at home, 5-1. The only goal in the 1st came from Duncan McGarrah of the Icedogs. In the 2nd period Bryson Fletcher of the Americans scored followed by a goal from Icedogs forward Cooper Walsh. The Icedogs added three to their lead in the 3rd with goals from Hazen McKay, Kadyn Fennell, and Luke Hartge. Icedogs goalies Conan made 46 saves of 47 and Brandon Keeney made 10 of 10 while Americans goalie Matt Maniglia made 26 of 30.
 
Helena Bighorns 7 @ Butte Cobras 2 - The Helena Bighorns traveled to defeat the Butte Cobras, 7-2. The Cobras started strong with two goals in the 1st from Robin Bagley and Ty Stovin before the Bighorns could put up three goals from Abraham Laggis, Ty Niskanen, and Darren Donovan. In the 2nd the Bighorns added two to their lead with goals from Porter Tirrill and Laggis. The Bighorns put up another two in the 3rd from Andrew Deskin and Gavgn Galloway. Goalie Ethan Racz of the Bighorns made 27 saves of 29 in the win while Aiden Waal of the Cobras made 29 of 36 in the loss.
