Saturday Scores: Milwaukee and Peoria punch playoff tickets

Ethan Chesney and the Peoria Mustangs are back in the 2023 Fraser Cup Playoffs.

Saturday Box Scores

St. Louis 2 @ Milwaukee 9: The Milwaukee Power swept the St. Louis Jr. Blues over the weekend after a 9-2 win on Saturday night. The Jr. Blues got on the board first with Matthew Mahoney. Milwaukee answered back with Connor O’Neal and Colin March for a 2-1 lead. The Power added four goals in the second period with Blake Keller, Bryce Garber, Matthew Ebersole and Max Erstad for a 6-1 lead. In the third Connor O’Neal added another for a 7-1 Power lead. St. Louis’ Mahoney added his second of the game for a 7-2 score. Milwaukee closed out the game adding two more goals with Patrick Toomey and Max Mudge for a 9-2 final. Gavin Wohlmacher stopped 26 shots in the win. 

Peoria 2 @ Wausau 1 (OT): Massimo Polistina lit the lamp for his 12th goal of the season 1:16 into the extra period to lift the Mustangs past Wausau on the road. After a scoreless opening period, Matthew Witt broke the deadlock with a powerplay goal for the Cyclones. Samuel Truxaw scored his 1st goal in the NA3HL 11:29 into the 2nd period to even the score. Kason Yamada had a strong performance in net for the Mustangs, stopping all but one of 34 shots faced. Collin Lemanski made 27 saves in between the pipes for Wausau. 

Gillette 4 @ Granite City 6: Defenseman Kyle Mortenson had a goal in two assists to help Granite City edge past the Wild in a cross-divisional matchup. Ashton Ericksen and Josef Lalli traded goals for their respective clubs to keep the score level through 20 minutes. Granite City found a one goal lead after two periods as Kyle Mortenson, Reed Hanus, and Matthew Delany buried for Granite City while Gillette’s goals came from Sky Solig and Saizha Norwegian. Hayden Johnson buried a pair of powerplay goals in the final frame to put the game out of reach. Solig scored with 26 seconds left to pick up his 2nd of the contest. Ryan Lehet made 23 saves in the win while Jake Turek made 34 stops for Gillette. 

Alexandria 2 @ Minnesota 3: The Minnesota Loons edged past the Alexandria Blizzard in a 3-2 final. The Blizzard closed out the first period with a 2-0 lead with Wyatt Johnson and Cole Klingbeil scoring. In the second, the Loons got on the scoresheet with Gavyn Lund, 2-1. In the third, the Loons added two goals as Sebastian Schuehle and Jack Hanson scored for a 3-2 final. Goaltender Matthew Ryyanen took the win stopping 34 shots.

New Mexico 3 @ El Paso 2: The New Mexico Ice Wolves took their second win of the weekend over the El Paso Rhinos in a 3-2 final score. After a scoreless first period, El Paso got on the board with Tyler Dunkel. The Ice Wolves scored back-to-back to take a 2-1 lead with Jameson Klein and Braeden Whitesell. In the third, Mike Sobaski added to the Ice Wolves lead, 3-1. Liam Mooney got on the score sheet for the Rhinos. Goaltender Pierson Haislet took the win after stopping 24 shots. 

Bozeman 2 @ Yellowstone 0: The Bozeman Ice Dogs blanked the Yellowstone Quake in a 2-0 contest. Bodie Shepardson scored in the second period and then Owen House in the third for a 2-0 final. Axel Rosenlund posted a 33 shot shutout win. 

Great Falls 7 @ Badlands 4: The Great Falls Americans bounced back to take a 7-4 win over the Badlands Sabres. The Americans took a 2-0 lead in the first with Jace Thompson scoring twice. In the second, the Americans added two more goals with Jack Metcalfe and then Thompson netting his third of the night, 4-0. Badlands added two goals to close out the period with Aden Cobbs and Peyton Wilson, 4-2. Jace Thompson added another goal for the Americans, 5-2. Badlands made a push with back-to-back goals with Keenan Howard and Brady Ridnour. Thompson added his fifth of the night followed up by Matt Ramstad for a 7-4 final. Goaltender Ryan Stowe stopped 30 of 34 shots in the win. 

Sheridan 6 @ Butte 3: The Sheridan Hawks took a 6-3 win over the Butte Cobras on the road. In the first Makahi Sparks scored twice for the Hawks and Nick Bradshawks for the Cobras. In the second, Luke Schleusner evened the game 2-2. The Hawks took back the lead with back-to-back goals with Danny Shelden and Teejay Torgrimson, 4-2. Tyler Tosch added a late goal for the Cobras to end the second, 4-3. In the third the Hawks added two more goals with Teejay Torgrimson and Ryan McKenna for a 6-3 final. Patric Loeffler took the win after stopping 51 shots. 

Willmar 1 @ Mason City 8: The Toros improved their win streak to eight games after dominating and taking down the WarHawks 8-1. In the 1st, Dakota Lenz potted a pair of goals and Colin Hedland added another to get Mason City ahead early. Cullen Hogan added to the lead with a score late in the middle frame. Luke Robertson, Petr Lukes, David Loahr, and Nolan Christy piled on the offense with scores in the 3rd period. Willmar’s lone goal came midway through the 2nd period from Sam Holm. Connor Graham picked up the win making 33 saves on 34 shots while Zackary Ortolano and Michael D’Orazio combined for 22 stops in Willmar’s crease. 

Long Beach 2 @ Norwich 4: A three goal 2nd period fueled the Sea Captains past Long Beach 4-2. Norwich’s Teagan Beier and Long Beach’s Colin McPherren traded goals in the opening frame. Quinten Olsahn, Shane Mazur, and Angelo Donzella put the Sea Captains in the driver’s seat with scores in the final frame. Long Beach’s remaining goal game from Christopher Keller in the form of a penalty shot. Andrew Yocum was the victor between the pipes making 27 saves. Ryo Murakami made 35 saves in the loss. 

Oregon 2 @ Rochester 4: The Rochester Grizzlies continued their winning streak Saturday night after doubling Oregon’s goal output and winning 4-2. Spencer Klotz and Connor Stoffel both tickled twine for the Grizzlies in the opening frame while the Tradesmen’s Max Rotsaert kept them within reach with a goal in the period. Ben Oakland and Luke Morrisette extended the lead with goals in the middle frame. Max Rotsaert found his 2nd of the game to spark a comeback bid but Rochester was able to hold on. Tate Cothern kept out 15 in the win while Tyler Fromolz and Fred Roufs combined for 23 saves.
