Mason City goalie Carlson makes NCAA commitment

July 5, 2022

The Mason City Toros, proud members of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL), are excited to announce that Top Prospects goaltender Owen Carlson has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for Lawrence University, a member of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA).

He becomes the fourth Toros player from this past season to announce a college commitment.

Prior to beginning his junior career in early 2020, Carlson made a name for himself at the high school level in Minnesota, winning 31 games over a three-year varsity career for the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton High School program. He also made four North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) appearances for the Minnesota Wilderness 18U team that season, winning three games.

Carlson, 20, would open his junior career on a high note on March 1, stopping 12 shots in a 40-minute relief appearance for the North Iowa Bulls and earning the victory in a game against the Peoria Mustangs.

The 6’2/180 lbs. native of Esko, Minnesota headed south to the St. Louis Jr. Blues for the 2020-21 season, landing an 2021 NA3HL Top Prospects nod behind 13 wins with a 2.68 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.

He returned to the River City for 2021-22 and capped off his junior career with a 15-5 mark for the Mason City Toros, including three shutouts and a 2.23 goals-against average, and earning both wins for Team White at the 2022 NA3HL’s Top Prospects event.

He also picked up both wins for the Toros in their West Division semifinal series against the Willmar WarHawks, making a season-best 50 saves in the series-clinching victory.

Carlson becomes the first Tier III player in Mason City history to commit to Lawrence University, and will join a team under new leadership as the season draws closer. Brett Wall takes over a program that finished 10-13-4 during the 2021-22 campaign, locking up its first appearance in the NCHA playoffs in four years.
